Riverside Campground - Abingdon, VA
October 2002
These pictures are from my trip to Virginia in October to ride the Virginia Creeper Trail. We stayed at the Riverside Campground in Abingdon - a very nice place to camp! Riverside campground doesn't have a webiste, but you can call them for more information: (276) 628-5333. The campground location: 18496 North Fork River Rd, Abingdon, VA 24210. More information about the area can be found on the town of Abingdon's website www.abingdon.com
Our campsite... well, campsites. We had our choice of sites, but couldn't go past the hookups since they had just re-seeded the grass since it was the end of their season. So, we spread out over the front half of two sites. Though my SUV was the only thing on the second site. That's Lisa, my friend and coworker, starting to set up the tent.
That's me, Photo Spread, working on the last of the setup. This is looking from our campsite towards the office/shower house/pool/etc. The sites had a lot of room, but not much of any privacy. Not an issue for us, since we were the only tent campers there at the time. You can see a fire ring on one of the sites just across the road.
This picture is from the Riverside Campground brochure, and shows the sites actually down on the river. Our site was just up from the river, separated by a treeline. We could still hear the river gurgling by at night, though.
Another picture from the campground brochure, showing the pool and other activities. There are a lot of seasonal campers there, but still plenty of room for the "little guys". If you look in the background of the pool picture, you can just see a lightpole. That was right over our campsite - ugh! So, avoid site X-1 unless you like a nightlite on all night. (We didn't notice the light since we set up in daylight - oops!)
Anther view of the riverfront campsites. It was raining and dreary when I took the picture, so it looks much gloomier than it really is. All the sites are grassy - nice!
One last view of the campsite. We are getting ready to leave in the rain, so I have moved my car closer to the dining canopy to try and keep things as dry as possible. Everything you see is on one site - and only the front half of it, at that! The fire ring is behind the dining canopy, and our picnic table is under it. (All the other rings & tables had been stored for the winter, as the campground closes in November.)
